Travel to the Askja caldera in your very own private Super Jeep.

 

One of Iceland´s most famous volcanoes is Askja. Unheard of until 1875 when its eruption sent shockwaves across Northern Europe, Askja lies deep in Iceland´s interior in a wilderness that is breathtakingly beautiful. The nearby crater of Viti has a geothermal lake at its base. The water is a milky blue colour and its temperature is perfect for bathing.

 

Departing from Akureyri we take route 1 to Hrossaborg crater before taking road F88 and leaving inhabited land behind us. The lunar like landscape was used by NASA to prepare their astronauts for the Apollo moon landings. We stop at Drekagil, a gorge containing strange and fascinating rock formations before reaching Askja.

 

Parking at Vikraborgir, we then walk the remaining 5km to Askja and Viti before walking back to the jeep. On our way back to Mývatn we will stop at Mödrudalur, a farm that is accompanied by a cafe serving traditional Icelandic food and gift shop. There will be time to relax and enjoy some food before we head back.
